We are always in need of foster homes!
Foster Care is temporary care by foster “parents” who keep their canine guests safe until they can be placed in permanent homes.
Our foster care is the cornerstone of our organization. We do not have a shelter location, but rather bring homeless dogs into the homes foster care volunteers, where they’re loved and cared for and their true personalities can be observed in a relaxed, social environment. This approach allows each dog to receive very personalized care and be matched with a compatible forever family.
Veterinary treatment, training and socialization assistance is provided by us.
Sometimes people are apprehensive because they feel they aren’t home enough, or their apartment is too small. Remember, even if your home is not ideal for a dog’s permanent home, it is surely much better than a tiny cage in a shelter! You are providing the stepping stone that allows this to happen!
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:
1. Please fill out a Foster Application and email it to Waggyvolunteer@gmail.com. Applications are most easily read if they are pasted into the body of an email rather than sent as attachments.
2. Someone will contact you to see if you have any questions, and when you are ready to begin. You will receive a Quick Reference page with some tips, and updated contact information of members available to help if your adviser cannot be reached and you have a question. If you don’t get this sheet, please ask!
3. We will match you up with a dog in need that seems compatible with your home, and contact you to confirm you are willing to take the particular dog into foster care. Many of the dogs we take are in immediate danger, so please get back to us as soon as possible.
4. Once you have your dog, a Waggytail adviser will help you through the adoptions process. An adviser is an experienced Waggytail member who can answer any questions you have. Once your pup is settled in and comfortable, and you’ve observed his or her personality, your adviser will post the dog on petfinder based on your descriptions. Feel free to add cute quirks, and take some swell glamour shots that will draw people to look!
Your adviser will screen applications, and forward ones that are good on to you so that you may set up a meet and greet to see if a forever match is made.
FAQ
Q: How long will I have my foster dog?
A: Unfortunately, there is no real answer. We never know – it could be days, or months! If you have time restrictions or vacation plans, just let us know ahead of time and we can plan to have somebody take over. We ask that you give at least a 2 week notice whenever possible.
Q:Who pays for vet care?
A:If your dog needs veterinary care, Waggytail Rescue covers the costs directly to credit card on file at their approved veterinarian. ALL veterinary appointments MUST be approved by Waggytail Rescue prior to visit.
Q:What if I get too attached?
A:The first one is always the hardest to let go of – but once you see photos and hear about how happy the pup you helped is, you will be rewarded more than you ever expected. And the easiest distraction from an empty home is to fill it with another life that needs you. Many of our foster parents do find a dog that is “The ONE” and end up adopting. We love this, too! We hope you will still continue to foster
